Gandhi believed that blaming others would never resolve the conflict. A Satyagrahi, he asserted that separatism and hatred within each person led to violence. During the Calcutta riots of 1947, he held everyone responsible. He admonished all to “turn the searchlight inwards and to see that the street criminals directly responsible for most of the violence, the goondas, were a reflection of the “goondaism” within every Hindu, Muslim and Sikh.
